Scholarships and Awards

The Students’ Association of Red Deer Polytechnic is dedicated to supporting and encouraging student endeavours and pursuits. Proceeds from SA businesses, including The Lift and the Far Side Bar & Grill, help support the 30-plus awards and scholarships given by the Association.

Your Students’ Association celebrates student success and positive contributions to student life on campus by conferring a variety of awards and scholarships at the Students’ Association Awards Ceremony. The Students’ Association also presents a number of other awards and scholarships throughout the year.

Students and faculty are encouraged to nominate individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the college community.

SA Awards and Scholarships

The Part-Time Staff Member Award (3)

Value: $750
Deadline: March 1st

Eligibility: Awarded to a Member employed by the Association.

Criteria: Based on outstanding performance in that individual’s area and dedication, over and above the requirements, to the Association.

Student Group Award (2)

Value: $300
Deadline: March 1st

Eligibility: Awarded to a Student Group

Criteria: Based on outstanding dedication to the student body through Student Group involvement which goes well above and beyond the predetermined priority of that Student Group.

College Member Contribution in Student Affairs Award (2)

Value: Framed Certificate and $20 Association Gift Certificate
Deadline: March 1st

Eligibility: Awarded to a member of the College community.

Criteria
: Based on a dedication to student affairs. The recipient of this award will have continually been involved in student activities, and/or committees of the Association.

The Student of the Year Award (1)

Value: $2,000
Deadline: March 1st

Eligibility
: Awarded to a student who has been enrolled in a full-time capacity. Executives of the Association in the year considered will not be eligible.

Criteria: Awarded to the student who most demonstrates outstanding contributions and leadership in the field of student affairs. The recipient of this award will have performed at a level well above the requirements of that individual’s position.

Mental Health Initiatives Award (5)

Value: $750
Deadline: March 1st

Eligibility
: Awarded to a Member of the Association.

Criteria
: Based on outstanding leadership in the area of mental health initiatives.

Terry Wood Scholarship (1)

Value: $1,000
Deadline: March 1st

Eligibility
: Awarded to a Member of the Association.

Criteria: Student must have demonstrated personal growth and involvement leading to the betterment of the Students’ Association and its members.

Student Volunteer Awards (5)

Value: $750
Deadline: March 1st

Eligibility
: Awarded to a Member of the Association.

Criteria: Based on volunteer activities that benefit the students of Red Deer College.

The Outstanding Dedication Award(s) (max 5)

Value: $1,000
Deadline: March 1st

Eligibility
: Awarded to a Member of the Association. Executives of the Association in the year considered will not be eligible.

Criteria
: Based on outstanding contribution and leadership in the field of student affairs. The recipients of this award will have performed at a level well above and beyond the requirements of the individual’s position.

Students’ Association – Outstanding Academic Achievement Award (1)

Value: $750
Deadline: May 31

Eligibility: Having completed a minimum of one year of full-time studies at RDP and continuing in full-time studies at RDP.

Criteria: Academic standing, financial consideration

Students’ Association – Academic Upgrading (2)

Value: $750
Deadline: May 31

Eligibility: A Red Deer Polytechnic student who attended two or more courses in the Academic Upgrading Program in the winter term of the most recent year. The student must be continuing full-time studies at Red Deer Polytechnic in the upcoming academic year.

Criteria: Academic achievement

Students’ Association – Carolyn Peevey Memorial Award (1)

Value: $750
Deadline: May 31

Eligibility: Mature student who has completed the first year of any diploma program who is continuing in the second year of the diploma at RDP.

Criteria: Academic excellence (minimum 3.5 GPA)

Students’ Association – Bachelor of Arts Scholarship (1)

Value: $750
Deadline: May 31

Eligibility: RDP student having completed the first year of the Bachelor of Arts Program taking at least 9 credits per term. Continuing on to the second year of the program at RDP.

Criteria: Academic standing and Polytechnic/community involvement

Eligibility: Student entering full-time studies in the third year of the Bachelor of Arts Collaborative Degree program who has completed the previous year of the same program at RDP.

Students’ Association – Bachelor of Education, Middle Years Scholarship (1)

Eligibility: Student entering full-time studies in the third year of the Bachelor of Education Collaborative Degree program – Middle School who has completed the previous year of the same program at RDC.

Criteria: Academic standing and financial need

Students’ Association – Bachelor of Applied Arts in Animation and Visual Effects Scholarship (1)

Value: $750
Deadline: May 31

Eligibility: Awarded to a student who has completed the RDP Theatre Studies Diploma Program and has been accepted into the Bachelor of Applied Arts in Animation and Visual Effects Program at RDP.

Note: If no continuing students fit the criteria, then students from outside RDP Theatre Studies will be considered.

Criteria: Academic performance. Financial need.

Eligibility: Student entering their second year of full-time studies in the Bachelor of Science Program at RDP.

Students’ Association – Involvement in College Governance Scholarship (2)

Value: $750
Deadline: May 31

Eligibility: Student continuing in the second year of full-time studies at RDP. Designed to encourage first-year students to become part of the Student Government process.

Criteria: Involvement in college or student government, academic standing, and financial need considered.

Students’ Association – Donald School of Business (1)

Value: $750
Deadline: May 31

Eligibility: Student continuing in full-time studies at the Donald School of Business.

Criteria: Involvement in College or student government, academic standing, financial need considered.

Students’ Association – University Transfer Program Scholarship (1)

Value: $750
Deadline: May 31

Eligibility: Student entering the second year of full-time studies in a university transfer program at RDP.

Criteria: Academic standing and financial need.

Students’ Association – Roy North Scholarship for Outstanding Contribution and Leadership (1)

Value: $750
Deadline: March 1

Eligibility: A full-time Red Deer Polytechnic student attending a credit program, including Collaborative programs, in the Fall and Winter terms of the current academic year. Students’ Association Executive Council members for the current academic year are not eligible.

Criteria: Outstanding contribution and leadership in the field of student political affairs.

How to apply: Nominate a student by completing the Students’ Association of Red Deer Polytechnic – Roy North Scholarship Nomination form. The nomination form will be available in the Student Funding & Awards Office (room 1102) and the Students’ Association. The deadline for nominations is March 1.

Students’ Association – Apprenticeship Graduation Award (2)

Value: $750
Deadline: May 31

Eligibility: Apprenticeship who has his/her complete program at RDP.

Criteria: Academic standing and Polytechnic/community involvement.

Students’ Association – Continuing Apprenticeship Scholarship (1)

Value: $750

Eligibility: Apprenticeship student who is continuing any RDP apprenticeship program.

Other Students’ Association Awards – By Nomination Only

Students’ Association of Red Deer Polytechnic Dr. Guillermo Barron Philosophy Scholarship

Value: $1,000

Together with Catherine Kappmeier, the Students’ Association is proud to co-sponsor the Dr. Guillermo Barron Memorial Philosophy Scholarship.

Eligibility: Continuing student entering full-time studies in their second, third or fourth year of a RDP program that has completed the most recent academic term at RDP (Collaborative and Partnership programs included). Preference given to a student taking a Philosophy course (not necessarily a Philosophy major).

Criteria: Based upon an essay submitted as part of the student’s normal course work. Preference will be given to written work that shows a spirit of independent thinking in Philosophy.

Application Process: Nominated by Faculty in the Humanities & Social Sciences Department in early May.

Students’ Association of Red Deer Polytechnic Athletic Awards

Value: $750 (12)

Eligibility: Member of the respective Red Deer Polytechnic team who meets the ACAC and CCAA eligibility requirements.
