Alberta Referendum Special Ballot Request
With October quickly approaching, along with the Alberta Referendum on October 19, keeping students informed of any changes to voting and its processes is key to ensuring Red Deer Polytechnic students are able to contribute their voice. As recently announced, the deadline for submitting a request for a referendum special ballot package is now September 25th at midnight.
This is especially important for students who are attending RDP, who meet the voting eligibility (a Canadian citizen, 18+ years of age, and a current resident of Alberta), and are living away from their primary residences. Voting in-person is associated with an individual’s ‘ordinary residence,’ i.e., where an individual plans to return when away from said residence. Usually, this is the residence of a student’s legal guardian or otherwise specified ‘legal home.’ Anyone attending RDP whose ‘ordinary residence’ is not within Red Deer will not be eligible to vote in-person in Red Deer on October 19th or during advanced voting days.
Other voting options include:
- Returning to the assigned voting area of their ordinary residence during the advanced voting period or on October 19th
- Request a special ballot to mail to Elections Alberta in advance
Special ballots must be received by the Elections Alberta office by Friday, October 16th at 5PM. Students may choose to mail their special ballot to their residence on-campus mailbox. Outgoing special ballots may be mailed by any reputable post office or deposit location. Special ballots may be requested for any reason, so if you feel you are busy with studies or other responsibilities during any voting period, don’t hesitate to request your special ballot!
